PURPOSE

The purpose of our club, organized in 1967, is to foster an interest in minerals, gems, fossils and lapidary arts, to give people with these interests the fellowship with each other and a chance to interact with informative meetings, programs and activities and to present our hobby to the community at our annual show.  We also try to foster an interest with the children of our community and to share our knowledge through programs and displays in the local schools and libraries.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE FROM ALLEN BROWN

I would like to thank everyone who participated in the silent auction at the last meeting. There were many interesting items and everyone seemed to have a good time. It has been suggested that we have two such meetings each year. One being a silent auction for various club related items, perhaps in the fall, and one that would be more of a tool/lapidary swap in February. I would ask the membership to give me some input on this idea at the next meeting. Also, let me remind members that if you have some small items that you want to sell, bring them to the meeting and set them up on a side table. We are currently looking to fill the guest speaker time slots for the 2008-2009 club year with club related lectures. If you or any one you know would like to offer to speak to the club, please have them contact me at 941-926-4171. See you at the meeting.

NEWS FROM MEMBERS

Tom Granata, our club treasurer, recently led a Purdue-Indiana Ft. Wayne University Alumni field trip on Palm Island.  He took twelve members of the group on a beach walk identifying shells, talking about the geology of Florida and the fossils of the area.  His trip will be featured in the April Alumni Newsletter.

Tom also spent a day in his wife's third grade classroom and helped the students through a fossil dig. He buried fossils and had the students dig them up and then identify and label them.  The students were able to take home their finds.
