The purpose of our club, organized in 1967, is to foster an interest in minerals, gems, fossils and lapidary arts, to give people with these interests the fellowship with each other and a chance to interact with informative meetings, programs and activities and to present our hobby to the community at our annual show. We also try to foster an interest with the children of our community and to share our knowledge through programs and displays in the local schools and libraries.

Wow, the show was a success, we are still working on final figures but Ralph Marble and Tom Granata reported that over 1000 people purchased tickets. The turnout was about double from last year; possibly caused by the cold weather (it was too cold to lie on the beach) and the four page spread by Susan Cairo in the Venice Gondolier. Susan came to my house to interview me and took pictures of some of my mineral collection; she also took pictures of my large display in the Venice Library. The article was worth several hundred dollars worth of publicity and our club thanks her for her effort.
The effect of the coupons in various newspapers were fruitful--each ad was worth $0.50 toward the admission cost of $3.00 for one person. The coupon count from various sources is 91 Herald Tribune, 197 Gondolier, 8 a New Age Publication, 10 School coupons (good for a group of people—kids free with parents, parents $2.50), 4 other Clubs (with that coupon—admission was $2.00). Our non-dealer members got in free if they sold tickets for 2 hours on Saturday or Sunday.
We are still waiting on the financial results of the three raffles. A complete financial report is in preparation. Sincere thanks to all the club members that volunteered their time selling tickets. We certainly never expected the large turnout and it usually took 4 people to deal with selling admission tickets and raffle tickets. It took an effort to explain that the Gondolier misprinted our ad and they must pay to get into the show. Especially thanks to the three non-members who pitched in and worked hard, Ursula’s husband, Joe Jablonski and her brother-in-law, Jim Taurasi both worked for hours and Ralph Marble’s friend “Freedom” saved the day on Saturday—once he worked as a bartender and his experience collecting the money and making change on Saturday morning was invaluable.
It is my sad chore to report that Jack Appleby died on Friday February 2, 2007. I am reprinting the 2003 interview that was in the newsletter. Jack passing is a real loss for the club. See insert.
I am sorry I needed to cancel the Board meeting on Monday Feb. 19, 2007. I hope the members of the Advisory Committee will meet with the Club Officers at the Board meeting on Monday March 19, 2007 at 7:00pm. The Pearl article will be continued next month.

NEWS FROM
GLORIA LENARDSON
After Gloria’s mother died, Gloria left Venice to go to Michigan to sell her mom’s house. She is still trying to sell the house, but in the meantime, her daughter, Angela Reichert, opened up Ozzie’s Eatery across the street from her WOW Gallery. Gloria is running the art gallery while Angela and her partner Rick Ott are running the eatery; Angela designed the building for the Eatery. Gloria supplied the following information from a local paper.
|
Harbor County News, New Buffalo, MI paper describes Ozzie’s Eatery…two cuts above typical fast-food fare, a great cup of coffee, sinfully satisfying desserts, velvety frozen custard—pistachio, pumpkin, tiramisu flavors, cheesecakes, cannoli, chocolate-dipped frozen bananas, and features Panini Sandwiches with multi-grain ciabatta bread and combos of roast beef, turkey, ham, vegetables and cheeses, lightly toasted in a machine resembling a waffle iron. They also serve breakfast. |

JACK APPLEBY 07/31/1922—2/2/2007
Jack Appleby was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, and went to Bradley College, then into the Coast Guard, where he taught welding and engine mechanics for four years. He met and married Marion sixty-three years ago in her home town of New London, Connecticut, when he was stationed there and she was one of the Rainbow Girls volunteering at the Masonic Service Center. After leaving the service, Jack took over his father-in-law’s roofing and sheet metal business in Waterford, Connecticut, while Marion worked as bookkeeper. Jack also worked in the roofing business in Miami, as an engineer for Monsanto, and as a home inspector. Marion has worked as a real estate broker. In the course of many years and much travel they have owned, rebuilt, or remodeled a number of houses, two of them in Barbados, where they lived for eleven years as members of the Paradise Beach Club. The Applebys have always been avid sailors, and have owned a total of twenty-two boats, notably a forty-one-foot Hatteras, in which they cruised to the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, and elsewhere. They have been members of the Venice Sailing Squadron. They moved to the Gulf Coast in 1973. The Applebys have three daughters, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Their eldest daughter Janis has a master’s degree in education and teaches at the high school in Venice, where she lives with her husband Robert Moore, International President of the Kiwanis. Their second daughter Nancy is an attorney, with her own offices in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Washington, D.C. Their youngest daughter Joan has a degree in education and teaches math at the middle school in Toms River, New Jersey.
Jack’s hobbies included playing drums, jewelry design, and metalworking. He made thirteen grapefruit-size bronze copies of the two-story steel “Children of the World” sculpture in front of the Kiwanis’ International Headquarters building in Indianapolis, IN. {See the second picture} Six of these pieces were donated to various heads of state around the world by son-in-law Robert Moore on his travels for the organization.
Jack was the speaker at our November 3, 2003 meeting and explained how he made the globes using the investment casting technique. Our club members will never forget the “kiln” he constructed out of a cardboard box—painted it to look like a real kiln and used it to illustrate the firing procedure—keeping a deadpan face until the end when we all broke up laughing after the plastic top part “fell off”. We will miss his “little boy” enthusiasm even at age 84. What a life he had. He and Marion were in charge our very successful Feb 7-8, 2004 show.
