PURPOSE

The purpose of our club, organized in 1967, is to foster an interest in minerals, gems, fossils and lapidary arts, to give people with these interests the fellowship with each other and a chance to interact with informative meetings, programs and activities and to present our hobby to the community at our annual show.  We also try to foster an interest with the children of our community and to share our knowledge through programs and displays in the local schools and libraries.

FROM THE PRESIDENT: GERALDINE M. VEST

It was a very busy summer for me—I spent much of my time with my friend, Rob Campbell, in Plant City working on our book Gemstones and Their Minerals—A Collector’s Edition.  We finally obtained a digital camera that attaches to the microscope and interfaces with the computer.  We are in the process of learning how to use it.  Because of the hurricane situation in Florida, I had the clear plastic, GE LEXAN, hurricane shutters installed on my house and plan to leave them up all the time.  At least I will not get any more golf balls through the windows.

On a sad note, Gloria Lenardson’s mother Nellie (Betty) Schuyler, age 87, died Monday July 25, 2005 in Venice, Florida and Ralph Marble’s mother Geraldine Marble, age 86, died August 31, 2005 in LaGrange Kentucky.

We almost have our web page up and working—for now—go to www.daniellcraftsandgems.com, on the left side click links, scroll down to GCMF&GC of Venice, FL—I will soon be able to put the newsletter on line.

The plans for the annual show are on schedule.     The show dates are Saturday January 28: 10 am to 5 pm; Sunday January 29: 10 am to 4 pm.  We will discuss details at the October meeting.

The library will be closed on Monday Jan 2—the meeting will be Wednesday Jan 4, 2006.  Note the information on the Fort Drum trip on page 3 and the info about the Southeastern Federation annual meeting, hosted by the Canaveral Mineral and Gem Society of Melbourne, Florida on November 11 to 13, 2005 on page 5.

Locked your keys in your car????

From Ursula Jablonski

If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone on your cell phone.  Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the other person at your home press the unlock button of your key fob (clicker), holding it near the phone on their end. Your car doors will unlock.  Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you.  Distance is no object you could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk!).

UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Videos will be available to check out at the October meeting.  A list of the newest ones follows.  These are all original new copies.  To check them out will require that you write out a check to the club for 1/2 the value of the tape and postdate it for the following meeting’s date or give the treasurer cash in an appropriately marked envelope.  We will not cash your check or spend your money—it will be returned to you at the next meeting when you return the tape.  It is difficult for the Turzanskis to bring all of the tapes, so only the new ones will be available in October.

ONLY MEMBERS CAN CHECK OUT TAPES.
